A note from Dr. Inada: Although a lot of social and clinical issues remain unsolved in HIV/AIDS battle, the infection has become a manageable chronic disease because of developments in anti-HIV medicines since 1996. Until recently, these benefits were limited to patients in the developed countries such as the U.S. and Europe, but NOT in the developing countries in Asia and Africa. As many as 80% of the 40 million HIV infected or AIDS patients in the world are not able to receive the new treatments. In the year 2000, I attended the International AIDS Conference in South Africa because of my long time concerns about the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. I had the chance to stop in Nairobi, Kenya when returning to New York and was inspired to start a free medical clinic in the Pumwani District of Nairobi because of the health conditions that existed there. Since then, I have lead a team of doctors and nurses to travel there 2 or 3 times a year to perform medical and dental services, HIV counseling and testing, follow-up assistance, and educational lectures and training for local residents, National Government Officials, and local medial staff. In 2006 the Kenyan Government began distribution of free anti-HIV medications (AVR) without establishing proper HIV treatment education and infrastructure support. The lack of support and education gives us serious concerns for the rapid emergence of resistant HIV strains because people are not taking the medicines properly or on a regular basis. This fact will curtail future options for controlling the disease and will create problems with the transmission of resistant strains of the HIV virus without our help. The successful results of our visits to provide free medical services, assistance and education to the local people and members of the NGO encourages us to expand this effort and establish a permanent presence of experienced personnel there. We seek everyone’s understanding of the dire circumstances there and ask for any financial support you can give so that we may continue our efforts to provide medical services to those overlooked by the rest of the world. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Dr. Yoritaro Inada, DVM, PhD |
